If you could do anything you wanted on a Sunday, what would you do?
This is what I would do: sleep in, go workout at the gym, grab breakfast out, come back home and spend the rest of the day reading, watching TV or working on a fun project.
Ah, what a dream!
However, I’m an adult with a husband and two little girls. So, though I may feel like doing those things, I know that if I want to have a good week, I need to have an intentional Sunday routine.
7 Things to Do on Sunday for a Better Monday thru Friday
1. Church
It is very tempting to sleep in and skip makeup and nice clothes on Sundays. And if you haven’t been to church in a while, it’s even harder to get yourself out the door. (We won’t even get started on the additional work it takes to get little people ready.) But, I never regret going to church. Singing praises with a roomful of other voices and gathering with other Christians, though flawed, is an experience you can’t find anywhere else. Plus, I have found that it gets my mind right and prepares my heart for the week ahead.
2. Movement
Every day is better when you get your body moving. For years, I took Sunday completely off from movement, but in the past year, I’ve discovered that taking a walk, doing yoga, or hiking is better for me mentally and physically than doing nothing.
3. Rest
It is important to make time for rest every week, and that doesn’t necessarily mean a nap, though I am totally in favor of those. Resting could mean reading a book, sitting outside, or journaling. The goal with rest is to do something that recharges you for the week ahead.
4. Review your calendar.
Sunday is the best time to look at what will be happening the upcoming week and talk it through with your family. This is when we discuss what nights we have activities, who is responsible for child transportation, what still needs to be done to be ready for a certain event, and what day my hubby and I will have lunch together. (We have lunch dates while my oldest is in school.)
5. Set weekly goals.
I have always found that I never achieve a goal unless I can break it down into smaller pieces. So, each Sunday, I set my priorities for the week. These come from my yearly goals. For example, with writing this blog, one week my priority may be writing blog posts and the next creating a new product. Each of these weekly goals gets me closer to my ultimate goal of growing this blog.
6. Food prep and/or meal plan.
Because Sunday is so much less hectic than other days of the week, it’s a good time to do a bit of food prep. I don’t want to dedicate much of my day to prepping food, but it is helpful to wash and chop fruits and vegetables and assemble some snacks for the girls. I know many people like to meal plan on Sundays, which is easier after you have looked at your calendar and know how many meals you need for the upcoming week. I no longer meal plan on Sundays because I discovered that Monday is the worst day for grocery pickup at my local store.
7. Think through what you will wear.
How often have you stood in front of either your or your child’s closet, wanting to wear a particular thing only to realize it isn’t clean. Some occasions like special meetings, picture day, or themed events require a certain outfit that must be prepped ahead of time. At least by thinking about those things on Sunday, you have time to do laundry if you need to.
Your Sunday routine doesn’t have to be a chore or a bore; it’s about balance. Don’t spend your entire day working, and don’t spend the entire day resting. The best way is a mix of both.
