Veggies are so good for you, and though I always plan to eat tons of them, sometimes I am just not in the mood and avoid cooking them. So, it’s no surprise that our veggies occasionally go bad, and I have to throw them away.
But fortunately, there are ways to make veggies last longer so we actually eat them.
Like I mentioned in this post about how to make fruits last longer, I researched how to properly store the top 20 most popular fruits and veggies, and today I’m sharing what I learned about veggies.
Bell Peppers
Store peppers in the fridge, whole and unwashed. Keep them in a ventilated bag or container, unless they have been cut. Place cut peppers in an airtight container.
Broccoli
Mist head of broccoli with water and wrap in damp paper towels. Put in the fridge and eat within 2 to 3 days.
Carrots
Keep carrots stored in water in an airtight container in the fridge. Replace the water once it becomes cloudy.
Celery
Keep celery whole and wrap in aluminum foil to trap gas. Rewrap each time after using, and store in the crisper.
Corn
Leave corn in the husk and store in the fridge in a sealed bag.
Cucumbers
Wrap cucumbers in paper towels and put in an unsealed plastic bag. Store in crisper.
Lettuce
Cover lettuce with a paper towel to absorb any moisture, and put in an airtight container.
Onions
Remove onions from the plastic bag if applicable. They must be stored in a ventilated container. Keep onions in a cool and dark place, but don’t store them with potatoes.
Potatoes
Remove damaged potatoes and store in a cool place in a cardboard box or paper bag.
Tomatoes
Store on the counter stem side down, out of the sun, in a single layer. Only put tomatoes in the fridge if they are overripe, and then take them out and allow them to come to room temperature before serving.
