I love celebrations, love family traditions and love making memories. And, that includes Halloween.
Halloween can be controversial in Christian circles. There are some who don’t celebrate at all, some who celebrate without the spooky parts, and some who love Halloween.
I fall in the second group, but I say, to each his own.
Even if your family loves Halloween, door-to-door trick-or-treating is starting to be a thing of the past.
If you are looking for alternatives to trick-or-treating to do with your family so you can still enjoy Halloween, here are a few ideas I’ve put together.
7 Halloween Activities for Families
Trunk or Treat
Many churches and organizations host trunk-or-treat events. If you’ve never been to one, people decorate truck beds or car trunks in a theme and hand out candy to kids who come to the event.
Community Festivals
Some towns have fall festivals with music, pumpkin patches, candy and crafts. These can be fun for the whole family, not just kids.
Hand Out Candy
Though I think trick-or-treating is on the way out, if you live in a neighborhood, you’ll probably get kids coming to your door. Why not dress up yourself and surprise kids with an epic costume and good candy.
Host Your Own Halloween Party
One way to guarantee everyone has a good time is to host a party for your friends and family. Make apple cider, have a pumpkin carving contest and give awards for the best costume. And, invite me, cause that sounds like a rockin’ good time.
Haunted House
By the time I hit my teens, going to a haunted attraction was THE thing to do. I grew up in the country, so it was usually a haunted forest, but I digress. If you have older kids or you and the hubby like a good scare, check out what your town has to offer.
Boo the Neighbors
This is the cutest idea to use the Halloween holiday to do something nice for your neighbors. Nowadays, it is rare to know your neighbors very well, so this would give you a way to break the ice, all while showing your kids how to be kind. Family Night
We did not celebrate Halloween growing up. Instead, we had family night. Our tradition was to eat pizza, watch a movie and eat our favorite candy. If you prefer not to celebrate Halloween, this is a good alternative.
Even with all these fun ideas, I hesitated to write this post.
Halloween activities seemed a little silly for a blog on intentional living.
But what if we could take silly, fun occasions, just like Halloween, or Mardi Gras, or St. Patrick’s Day, and make them into something memorable for our families. Not by doing something elaborate or expensive, but just by doing something a little out of the ordinary.
Does your family celebrate Halloween? And if so, what do you like to do? Message me on Instagram or send me an email to share your traditions. I would love to get to know you and learn from you.
